The “Release” Series started one day when my paintbrush “released” dye over fabric I'd been printscreening for 2 days – without first checking with my brain! The result was a 4' penis and scrotum in purple – “Release I”.

Release is an opening

– like the fabled bird that stuck it's beak down the narrow neck of a fruit jar and needed to release the fruit to get free. We humans seem to like holding on more than releasing. We hold on to money, to books, to pictures, to memories, to other people. We hold on to the known, even when we're painfully aware that this is not what we need to do. But whether it's circumstances or just plain time, something usually conspires to makes us seek release. Some of us release the job that gave us a heart attack and trade it in for the interest that inspired us as a youth. Some of us release the “nay-sayers” in our life. Some of us release the loneliness and learn to enjoy ourselves, by ourselves. Some of us release our own tight grip on the known that keeps us from growing. Release is an opening.

Open the door and step through it.
